UPSC CDS Exam 2015 Complete Syllabus Exam Pattern, Marking and Examination Scheme




Union Public Service Commission conducts CDS (Combined Defense Services Exam) twice a year for admission to IMA (Indian Military Academy), INA (Indian Naval Academy), Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy. Selection process is carried out through written examination followed by SSB (Service Selection Board) Interviews, Medical examination and document verification. Here we have published full detail regarding written examination, marking scheme and syllabus for CDS written exam.

Scheme of CDS Examination:-

  • The CDS Exam comprise of 
    1. Written Examination.
    2. Interview for Intelligence and Personality Test.

  • Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme for CDS Written Exam:
    1. For admission to Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy.

  • Important instructions regarding written exam:
    1. Total marks allotted for written exam and interview will be equal.
    2. Written exam papers in all subjects will consists of objective type questions with single answer only.
    3. Question papers for all subjects except English will be set bilingually i.e English and Hindi.
    4. There will be penalty for answers marked wrong.  1/3rd marks of total marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Standard and Syllabus of Examination:-

  • Standard of Examination:-
    1. Standard of paper in Elementary Mathematics will be of matriculation level.
    2. The standard of other papers will approximately be as such as may be expected of a Graduate of an Indian University.
  • Syllabus of Examination:-
    1. English Code (1): The objective type question paper is designed to examine the understanding of English of the applicants and workman like usage of words.
    2. General Knowledge (2): General Knowledge question paper in CDS examination includes knowledge of current topics and of matters which are observing every day. The aspirants must be able to answer scientific aspects without any particular scientific study. They should have knowledge of History of India and Geographical issues without any specific study. The applicants must be able to answer these general knowledge questions to pass this test.
    3. Elementary Mathematics (3): The objective type question paper includes various topics of elementary mathematics. Candidates should have posses knowledge about these topics. There are lots of topics to cover which are as following:
      Arithmetic: Aspirants need to perform well in arithmetic which includes Number System, Fundamental Operations, Unitary Methods, and Elementary Number Theorems etc.
      Algebra: The applicants should able to solve basic operations, Remainder Theorem, Quadratic Equations, Linear equations and practical problems etc.
      Geometry: The candidates should able to answer geometric questions which contain Lines and angles, plane and plane figures and their related questions.
      Trigonometry: The applicants need to know the values of Sine x, cosine x and tangent x.
      Menstruation: The all candidates applying for the test should have knowledge of calculating areas of squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and parallelograms etc.
      Statistics: Everyone needs to know the collection and tabulation of data, histograms, pie and bar charts etc.

Intelligence and Personality Test

The SSB procedure consists of two stage Selection process-stage I and stage-II. Only those candidates who clear the stage I are permitted to appear for stage II. The details are :-
  • Stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating OIR) tests are Picture Perception *Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on combination of performance in QIR Test and PP and DT.
  • Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days. The details of these tests are given on the website www.joinindianarmy.nic.in
The personality of candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. the interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There are no separate weight-age for each test. The mks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance of the candidate holistically in all the test. In addition, marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the Candidate in the three techniques and decision of the Board. All these have equal weight-age.

The various tests of IO, GTO and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/absence of Officer Like Qualities and their train-ability in a candidate. Accordingly candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.
