7 Worst Mistakes Entry-Level Employees Must Avoid At Work At All Costs - Guest Post

Entry-level employees, nowadays, face a highly challenging job market. They often end up with a job that is either too much for them or too less. However, whether your job leads you to your future goals or not, here are the seven worst mistakes that you must avoid for workplace success:

  1. Flaunting a Bad Work Attitude: A bad work attitude will not only make you a miserable person but also make you fairly unpopular among your colleagues. You need to own a positive attitude at work in order to stop yourself from alienating your colleagues who can help you and pick you up in your rough days.
  2. Ignoring Social and Communication Skills: You think you were hired only for your technical skills and so you ignore your social and communication skills altogether. If you are giving your best to the former but not working on the latter, you will not stand out among other employees. You need to learn about your colleagues in order to make yourself a more efficient and effective colleague as well as an employee.
  3. Trying Too Hard to Create an Impression: You might have been popular during your academic years, but do not expect the same at your job. It is one point to know people around you and entirely another trying to be the best out of them. Keep in mind that you are not hired to please people. Your only job is to work that has been assigned to you. Pleasing people too much can cause your good performance to backfire.
  4. Not Taking Smaller Assigned Tasks Seriously: You might be assigned a task that is quite impressive at entry-level, or you might have been assigned a menial task like fixing up some errors. If you have been assigned such a task, swallow your pride and take your work seriously. This would highlight the fact that you do not say ‘no’ to any work that has been assigned to you. It will also help you be a responsible person and will eventually make your manager notice you and assign you more valuable and impactful tasks.
  5. Taking the Mistakes You Make Lightly: Every little mistake affected only you when you were studying- all the mistakes and errors you made, the work you did not complete or the work you handed in late. However, at office, every little mistake you make affects your colleagues, boss and eventually your company. Others might have to miss their deadlines, stay up late or lose important work to fix the errors that you made.
  6. Expecting More Salary and Off-Days: Keep in mind that the salary you got assigned at the starting level will be enough for you to survive with for a whole year. You cannot negotiate a raise after a few months. Similarly, most of the workplaces grant maximum two weeks of time off, so do not expect a full healthy vacation in return.
  7. Do Not Compare Yourself With Other Colleagues: You are new to work and the office environment. If you see an old colleague making some mistake and notice that the manager has ignored it, do not think that it would be the same case with you. Older colleagues have proved themselves to be more reliable and responsible. There is no match for the amount of time they have invested in the company.
If you are making any of these mistakes, now is the time to stop. Even the best of us can make such errors at the worst of times. If you have committed anything similar, acknowledge it, fix it, move on and do not let your one mistake shatter your confidence.
