Multiplication Shortcut- Multiplying a Number with 5

Here is multiplication trick to multiply a number (even and odd) with 5. Shortcut tricks are very helpful for fast calculations in competitive exams as time allotted is too less for lengthy calculations. So shortcut tricks helps us to solve questions is very less time.

Multiplying an Even Number with 5

To multiply an even number by 5, first halve the number and multiply it by 10.

Follow examples below:

Eg. 1: 

48 *5
= 48 /2 * 10
= 24 * 10
= 240 (Ans)

Eg. 2: 

76 *5
= 76/2 * 10
= 38 * 10
= 380 (Ans)

Multiplying an Odd Number with 5

To multiply an odd number with 5 first subtract 1 from the number. Now multiply this number with five (with method given above) and finally add 5 to it. 

Follow examples below:

Eg. 1: 

37 *5
= 36 * 5 (Subtract 1 from the number and multiply it with 5)
= 36/2 * 10
= 18 * 10
= 180 + 5 (Finally add 5)
= 185 (Ans)

Eg. 2: 

83 *5
= 82 * 5 (Subtract 1 from the number and multiply it with 5)
= 82/2 * 10
= 41 * 10
= 410 + 5 (Finally add 5)
= 415 (Ans)
