Reference Material and Exam Preparation Tips for Effective IIT JEE Main 2018

Being one of the sought-after entrance examination, IIT JEE puts you through tough competition to secure seat in one of the IITs. Students enroll for coaching classes that guarantee success while some opt for self-study for its preparation.

However, with a heap of study material from the coaching classes and schools to study from, aspirants are usually stressed, without an idea of what to study and how to cover all those in a limited period of time.

Even though the syllabus is vast, you don’t necessarily require a lot of study material to prepare for IIT JEE. With a proper study plan and right reference books for all subjects, you can undoubtedly ace the exam. Before choosing the reference books, be clear with the syllabus from which the questions are framed, which is available for download on the official website.

NCERT Books

The candidates should begin their preparations for any national entrance examination with NCERT books as these are framed based on the CBSE curriculum and the topics covered give you conceptual clarity.

Moreover, thoroughly preparing with NCERT will eventually help you excel in both, board exams and IIT JEE. Also, work on the topic tests given at the end of each chapter to ensure thorough preparation.

Guide books

Selecting a good guide book will sort out most of the problems you face during preparation. Even though NCERT books give an in-depth coverage of topics, guide books help in providing an exam based approach to each topic so that you can know the different ways in which the questions can be framed from a single concept. A list of such books for each subjects is as follows.

Physics- Concepts of Physica Vol I and II by H.C.Verma, Physics for IIT JEE- Resnich, Haliday, Walker.
Chemistry- O.P.Tandon books on physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry, Numerical chemistry by P.Bahadur
Mathematics- Class XI and XII mathematics by R.D. Sharma, M.L.Khanna book on IIT mathematics for JEE Main.

Notes from Coaching Centers

Enrolling for a reputed coaching institute will give you a clear idea of what to study and what to leave. Moreover, they provide separate study material with every concept explained clearly for better understanding.

Further, they teach you tricks and shortcuts that will help you solve the toughest problems like cake walk. The coaching is available both in regular and online modes. Popular among them includes the FIITJEE, and Byju’s classes.

Video Lectures

With a video tutorial, you will be able to visualize the concepts as they are mostly displayed in the form of animation or an easy to understand way.

Also, these tutorials can be accessed several times whenever you get a doubt on the topic unlike the classrooms where a topic taught once missed is difficult to learn again. As they can be viewed at home at your own pace, you will also cut down the stress of travelling to a coaching institute.

These lectures are available in plenty across the internet for free. The most renowned is the IIT-PAL lectures that can be found on the Swayamprabha website and on YouTube.

Previous Year Question Papers

In order to succeed in the entrance exam, you should be first clear with the pattern of the exam, and the concepts asked repetitively so that you can filter the least important topics from the syllabus.

But it cannot be done easily and you will have to go through a set of previous years question papers to know the same. They are available for practice on online education platforms as test series and in the form of question banks that are available in the book stores.

Practicing with them will give you the clarity of applying concepts, identifying lengthy problems, using quick approach techniques and speed calculations.

Mock Tests

As JEE Main is conducted in online mode, live mock test is put up on the official JEE website every year, with which the aspirants can practice for a number of times.

Apart from that, the mock tests are also available on several educational websites based on the previous year pattern and syllabus, most of which are free to attempt. Practicing mock tests repeatedly will help you in time management and leave you stress free in the actual exam.

It also improves your speed and accuracy as they are set for a limited time pre-programmed in the system. They are available as full length mock tests as well as topic wise, in line with JEE pattern.

Sample Papers

The sample papers are nothing but those framed according to the pattern and syllabus of the exam. They are not the actual question papers but provide you an idea of how the questions will be. Most of them are available as solved papers and hence, it will be easier to know your mistakes and correct the same. They are available for download in almost all educational websites for download.
